‘Devil on My Shoulder’ Review: A Brutal Path to Payback

We read Devil on My Shoulder and yeah… this one was a lot, so let’s talk about it.

Devil on My Shoulder
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Writer: Kyle Starks
Artist: Piotr Kowalski
Colorist: Brad Simpson
Letterer: Josh Reed
Release dates: November 2025 – March 2026

The series is written by Kyle Starks and illustrated by Piotr Kowalski, the same team behind Where Monsters Lie and Where Monsters Lie: Cull-de-sac, which we absolutely loved and even reviewed here. That alone made us curious when this was announced, because we already trust them when it comes to horror comics. You can really feel that same confidence here, even if the tone is way more grounded and brutal this time.

The story follows a young woman who survives forty days of unimaginable torture at the hands of five men, only to be left for dead. Years later, she tracks them down one by one, ready to take revenge in the most violent ways possible. The series takes us back to what she endured, from the psychological abuse to the physical violence, while also showing her present day mission as she hunts them down. Each encounter gets more intense, with strange connections, underworld dealings, and a lingering mystery around the fifth man that keeps things moving toward a darker and more unpredictable ending.

This was honestly a tough read at times. The first issue especially doesn’t hold back at all, and some scenes were hard to get through. It’s not just violent for shock, it really makes you sit with what she went through, mentally and physically. I hated those guys immediately, so when the revenge starts, it feels earned… but also extreme. Like, this might be one of the most hardcore revenge stories I’ve read (and I would say that I read quite a few!).

What I liked is how smart her revenge feels. She’s not just going in blindly, she’s trained, calculated, and every move has meaning. The way she names them based on how they acted during her captivity stuck with me too. And then the series keeps pushing further, each issue going a bit more intense, with some wild moments and even a few twists near the end that take things in a darker direction than I expected. It’s brutal, sometimes uncomfortable, but I couldn’t stop reading.

Not an easy read at all, but if you’re into dark and relentless revenge stories, this one definitely leaves an impact.
