Whenever I see Doug Wagner teaming up with Daniel Hillyard for a new series, I always know it’s going to be a blood bath. So when Image announced their new miniseries I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer, coming out this April, I couldn’t help but scream… with excitement.

In their new series, Rennie Bethary has just been accepted into New York City’s most prestigious fashion school, and I need to quote it, because “her designs are daring, edgy, and totally singular. Oh, and they’re made of human flesh.” Like, WHAAAAT? This is the kind of premise that could only come from Wagner’s twisted mind. This is a compliment. 

I’m a huge fan of Wagner and Hillyard’s collaborations. Their work on Plastic (and the recent prequel, Plastic: Death & Dolls) is right at the top of my list of favorite campy horror series of all time.

If you haven’t read Plastic, let me break it down for you: it’s a delightfully demented story about a serial killer whose one true love is Virginia… a blow-up doll. I mean, LOVE IS LOVE, okay? When she’s is kidnapped, Edwyn won’t stop killing whoever is on the way to get her back. Plush, another one of their gems, was actually the series that introduced me to their work. It’s cannibals dressed as… mascots? I mean, it’s absurdly funny and gory. 

What I’ve always loved about Wagner’s writing is his ability to create deeply flawed, almost impossibly bizarre characters, and still make you root for them… sort of. And Hillyard’s art is gruesome in all the right ways. With I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer, I’m expecting a haute couture bloodbath. If their past work is any indication, we’ll get a perfect blend of stylish storytelling, gory visuals, and dark humor.
