The Jersey Devil Rises in Let This One Be a Devil

Ever wondered what would happen if James Tynion IV and Steve Foxe took on the Jersey Devil? Well, wonder no more, because their upcoming series Let This One Be a Devil is about to bring this chilling legend to life, and I’m all in.

I’ve always been fascinated by legendary creatures, and the Jersey Devil (first introduced to me through the movie The Last Broadcast from 1998) is an extremely interesting one. Tynion and Foxe’s new series dives into the legend, following a scholar named Henry Naughton who uncovers the terrifying origin of the creature in the Pine Barrens in the early 1900s. It seems to be a perfect mix of myth, horror, and mystery that I can’t wait to experience. Let This One Be a Devil will also be the first in a new series of TRUE WEIRD tales from James Tynion IV.

The creative team behind this series is just as exciting as the story. Co-written by Tynion (Something is Killing the Children, to mention his most popular work) and Steve Foxe (Dark X-Men, All Eight Eyes), who also happens to be the editor on many of Tynion’s recent projects like W0rldtr33 and The Deviant (look at me mentioning these two series lightly, feigning not to be obsessed with them), you can expect a story that is rich in atmosphere and detail. Piotr Kowalski, known for his atmospheric work on Bloodborne or his great job on Where The Monsters Lie (the original series and the Cull-de-sac sequel, both being a lot of fun), is handling the art, and I’m already picturing the eerie Pine Barrens coming to life under his brush. Plus, the cover art by Gavin Fullerton is sure to capture the dark, mysterious vibe of this series, as we can already see from the covers of the first three issues.

What makes cryptid stories like the Jersey Devil so compelling is the mystery: are they real, or just myths that have evolved over time? That’s the tension Tynion excels at: blending the supernatural with real-world fears and questions. He’s extremely talented at playing with this theme, as we’ve seen in his other works like Blue Book and The Department of Truth. I’m excited to see how he explores that same tension in Let This One Be a Devil.

If you’re a fan of Tynion’s work, Let This One Be a Devil is shaping up to be a must-read. With a creative team that knows how to bring dark stories to life, this series promises a deep dive into the Jersey Devil’s terrifying lore, and I simply can’t wait to read the whole story.
