So, What’s the Story?
Phoebe Joplin grew up inside a closed-off community her parents helped build, one designed from the ground up to produce kids who were smarter, stronger, and more capable than everyone else. She’s never had a reason to question it, at least not until graduation night, when one of her friends dies in a way that makes absolutely no sense. Pulling on that thread starts unraveling everything Phoebe thought she knew about the place she grew up in, and what she finds underneath isn’t a community built to protect its kids so much as one built to control them, with a very steep price for anyone who figures that out.
Who’s Making You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive?

Lanzing and Kelly, often credited together as “The Hivemind,” are exactly the writing team we’d trust with a premise like this. We already loved their work on NYX, the 2024 X-Men series following a group of young mutants navigating New York after the fall of Krakoa. Their range beyond that is genuinely wide too, they’ve written Kang the Conqueror and Thunderbolts at Marvel, Batman & Robin Eternal and Gotham City Garage at DC, and picked up an Eisner nomination for Best New Series on IDW’s Star Trek, so this isn’t their first time working with this publisher either. Heather Vaughan is newer to us as a name, her background is mostly cover and illustration work for companies like Dark Horse, Vault, and Mad Cave, so a full interior art showcase like this looks like a real step forward for her, and the preview art already looks strong.
Why We’re Watching This One
Isolated-community horror hits a specific nerve for us, the idea that the thing keeping you safe might actually be the thing keeping you trapped is a well that horror rarely runs dry on, and this synopsis leans into it with real confidence. Lanzing and Kelly already proved with NYX that they can build a found-family dynamic worth caring about before things go wrong, and pairing that instinct with a paranoia-driven mystery sounds like a strong fit for both of them.
It also helps that IDW Dark has been building a genuinely solid track record since launching. The imprint kicked off in late 2024, partnering with Paramount Consumer Products to bring properties like A Quiet Place, Smile, The Twilight Zone, Event Horizon, and Sleepy Hollow to comics, while also publishing original horror titles and sequels to some of IDW’s longtime horror books, including 30 Days of Night (co-owned by IDW, Steve Niles, and Ben Templesmith) and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. We’ve been genuinely excited about IDW Dark since it was first announced, we’re big horror fans, and it’s rare to see a publisher commit an entire dedicated line to the genre rather than folding horror books into a broader catalog. We’ve already enjoyed A Quiet Place: Storm Warning and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees from the imprint, and You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive looks like another strong original addition to that lineup.

Fans of isolated-community thrillers and paranoia-driven mysteries should have this near the top of their list, and so should anyone who followed Lanzing and Kelly’s work on their various series.
