‘Dead Head Universe Presents: Final Girls Inc.’ Is the Series’ first spin-off

Iron Age Comics is expanding the Dead Head universe with its first spin-off, Dead Head Universe Presents: Final Girls Inc., written by A.C. Medina with art by Bruno Ferrante and colors by Vítor Xavuska. We’ve talked about Dead Head before and have been following the series since its launch, so seeing Rudy Rosa and Luz Castellana step into their own story immediately got our attention.

Before Rudy and Luz Met Dead Head

The new series takes us back to before Rudy Rosa and Luz Castellana teamed up with Dead Head, when the two were part of Final Girls Inc., an elite black ops agency made up of slasher survivors who operate from the shadows and hunt the very kind of killers they once escaped.

Alongside four other Final Girls, Rudy and Luz are sent on a rescue mission to the grounds of an old castle owned by a privileged family of slashers who have turned murder into a generational tradition. Their objective is to infiltrate the area, make their way through an ancient village packed with horrors, and retrieve a legendary Final Girl trapped somewhere inside.

Basically, take the organized slasher insanity of Dead Head, give the Final Girls their own black ops team, and send them directly into a castle full of hereditary murderers. We are very much listening.

We Were Already Waiting for More Rudy and Luz

One of the reasons we love Dead Head is that it understands how much fun a slasher universe can be. The killers are violent and completely unhinged, but they also have strong visual identities and clear themes, which makes every new one feel like an actual character rather than just another body with a weapon. The art leans into that too, using surprisingly bright and colorful tones around all the blood and chaos, and that contrast gives the series a look that really stands out.

I have a particular weakness for killers with a very specific theme, and Dead Head has absolutely fed that obsession. Rudy and Luz stood out as soon as they entered the original series too, because they brought a different kind of energy into a world already overflowing with slashers. I will always show up for a strong Final Girl, so learning that these two are getting a story built around their time with Final Girls Inc. immediately got us excited.

What makes the spin-off even more interesting is that we already know where Rudy and Luz eventually end up, but now we get to see what shaped them before meeting Dead Head. The castle setting also sounds like the perfect excuse to introduce an entirely new collection of killers, especially with a family that has apparently turned slashing into a legacy business. Very healthy family tradition.

A.C. Medina Has Our Attention

Our excitement is not only coming from Dead Head, either. A.C. Medina also co-wrote Abattoir 6 with Mina Elwell, another Iron Age Comics horror series we reviewed and one where we absolutely loved the writing. That book has a completely different premise, with humans raised as livestock in a future ruled by vampires, but it showed the same willingness to take a wild horror concept and build an actual world around it instead of relying on the premise alone.

Between Abattoir 6 and Dead Head, Medina has become one of those writers whose name immediately makes us curious about whatever horror idea comes next. Giving Rudy, Luz, and Final Girls Inc. their own corner of this universe feels like a very natural expansion.
