We won’t lie, that “six actors, one hit show” setup immediately made us think of Friends, especially with a main cover that leans into that exact ensemble energy. We say that as a compliment, we’re huge Friends fans ourselves, but we’d be shocked if Six of Us stays anywhere near that tone once the noir elements kick in.

Why We’re Watching This One

Tom King is one of those writers whose new announcements we circle on the calendar no matter what the premise is. He’s built an intimidating resume over at DC, writing some of the publisher’s biggest names: Batman, Wonder Woman, Action Comics, Detective Comics, and more. I’ll be honest, I don’t read a ton of that corner of his output, the shared DC universe still feels like a lot to jump into. But his creator-owned and Dark Horse work is a different story, and it’s the reason I always look forward to whatever he announces next. Animal Pound at BOOM! Studios and Helen of Wyndhorn at Dark Horse are both books we point people toward constantly, and Marvel’s The Vision holds a genuinely special place for me. It was one of the first comics I read when I started going deep into this hobby, and it’s stayed in my personal top ten favorite comics of all time ever since.

Which is why the real hook of Six of Us isn’t just King’s name, it’s that Gabriel Hernández Walta, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles are all back too. That’s the entire Vision team reassembled for a new story, and after everything that book pulled off, we’re not taking that lightly.

It also helps that this is a Dark Horse book. The publisher has a track record of taking swings that pay off, never the safest choice, often the most interesting one. Some of our favorite reads of the past year or so have come from their lineup: the LGBTQIA+ vampire horror mystery of Summer Shadows, the brutal supernatural revenge horror of Devil on My Shoulder, the spy-thriller of The Guy in the Chair, and one of my personal all-time favorites, the supernatural horror coming-of-age mystery The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos. A Hollywood noir fits right in with that pattern of Dark Horse not playing it safe.
