‘Malevolent’: When Science Goes Too Far, Demons Follow

A new sci-fi/horror series is coming from Image Comics, and it sounds right up our alley: let’s talk about Malevolent!

Malevolent #1
Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Justin Jordan
Artist: John Bivens
Colorist: Felipe Sobreiro
Release date: January 28, 2026

Malevolent is a brutal mix of sci-fi and horror from Justin Jordan and John Bivens, the co-creators of Spread. The story? It’s about humanity adapting to a world forever changed after the gates of Hell cracked open. Now, decades later, humans have created something new: a weapon that can kill demons. The only problem? She might be just as deadly as the monsters she’s meant to destroy.

We’re definitely excited for this one. Sci-fi horror is one of those genres that can be incredible when done right, and this premise sounds crazy, in the best way possible. The idea of humanity learning to live in the shadow of Hell, and then building something powerful enough to fight back… sounds full of possibilities. We’re already curious to see how far the story will push that balance between survival, fear, and science gone wrong.

It also helps that the creative team already has a strong track record together. The whole team worked on Spread, so there’s clearly some creative chemistry there, and that always shows on the page. We haven’t read Spread yet, but knowing how well they click makes this one even more interesting. We also really enjoyed Justin Jordan’s previous books, Harrower from BOOM! Studios and Mine Is a Long, Lonesome Grave from Oni Press were both excellent, each blending dark atmosphere with strong character work. Seeing him return to full-on horror with a sci-fi twist feels like the perfect move.

Malevolent #1 arrives on January 28, 2026 from Image Comics, and we’ll absolutely be checking it out the moment it hits shelves.
