Issue #41 picks up after the Year Zero arc and the standalone #0 prequel, and it keeps digging into Erica Slaughter’s past. This time we meet her as a younger hunter being raised and trained inside the House of Slaughter, learning the job under her mentor, Jessica. Deadly hunts are waiting for the two of them, and the arc also puts more of a spotlight on Cecilia, a character who looks set to complicate Erica’s life in a big way.

Who’s Making Something is Killing the Children?
James Tynion IV writes, Werther Dell’Edera draws and provides the main cover, and BOOM! Studios publishes. The two co-created the series, which launched in September 2019 as a five-issue limited series before being upgraded to an ongoing ahead of release thanks to strong early support from retailers and readers.
Tynion spent a decade writing Batman titles at DC, co-creating Punchline and Ghost-Maker along the way, before building a run of original horror hits like The Department of Truth and The Nice House on the Lake. He won the Eisner Award for Best Writer three years in a row, from 2021 to 2023. Dell’Edera is an Italian artist who has stayed on this book since the very beginning, and the series earned him a 2022 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series along with two Ringo Awards, including one for Best Single Issue for #20. Why We’re Watching This One
We’ve been following this series from the very start. Yes, even though our Issue #1 isn’t a first print, it still holds a special place in our collection. Honestly, Something is Killing the Children is one of the comics that pulled me into the comics world, so it’s hard to overstate how important this series has been to me. The writing is always sharp, and I love Erica as a character so much. This new arc promises to go even deeper into her past, especially her training in the House of Slaughter, and I’ve been waiting for Erica’s origin story to return.
It also looks like a return with real emotional weight. I’m ready for the ride, and I suspect a few of us are going to need a box of tissues by the end.
As usual, we’ll get to choose between several gorgeous covers, and a few have already been revealed. We’re especially loving the Miguel Mercado variant. April 30th can’t come soon enough!
