I’d like to think I’d play it safe, keep my head down, avoid saying anything remotely controversial, but that’s exactly the kind of thinking this book is poking fun at. The idea that survival means self-censorship, that staying alive requires becoming as inoffensive and agreeable as possible, is uncomfortably close to how a lot of us already behave online without a literal collar forcing us to. That’s what makes the satire land so hard, it’s not asking you to imagine something completely alien, it’s just turning the dial up on habits we already have.

A Smart, Unsettling Satire

Death Ratio’d is a smart, satirical look at a future where social media has gone too far. Russell’s biting commentary on our obsession with online validation is actually terrifying and made me wonder if it was actually a stretch or if we could, one day, push things that far. The concept of living on the edge of death with every post is an unsettling, yet fun premise that will make you think. While I’d love to see this explored further, the one-shot delivers a powerful and entertaining punch, sometimes funny, but mostly haunting in its portrayal of a society ruled by likes.
