‘Spider-Woman’ Comes Back to Her Detective Roots, With Carnage Along for the Ride

Jessica Drew getting a new ongoing series is already a big deal for us, she’s definitely one of our favourite Marvel characters. Add in the fact that this new run has her bonding with Carnage of all things, and Spider-Woman #1, arriving November 4, 2026, immediately became one of our most anticipated books of the fall.

Who Is Spider-Woman, and Why Do We Love Her So Much?

Jessica Drew has been through more reinventions than almost any other Marvel hero, spy, Avenger, private investigator, mother, Spider-Verse traveler, and every single solo run I’ve picked up has found something new and worthwhile to do with her. If I had to pick a favourite, it’s probably Dennis Hopeless’ 2015-2017 run, which took the bold swing of centering an entire arc on Jessica navigating pregnancy and early motherhood while still trying to be a hero, and made it one of the most human takes on a superhero I’ve ever read. Honestly though, I can’t think of a single Jessica Drew solo series I didn’t enjoy.

That’s part of why it stings that her last ongoing, the 2023-2024 series written by Steve Foxe that spun out of the Gang War event, only lasted 10 issues. We’re hoping this one gets the room to actually breathe. We also genuinely loved Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1 back on September 2, both stories in it, Ann Nocenti’s return to the character alongside artist Stefano Raffaele, and Dan Watters and Andrea Broccardo’s story, which is what’s directly leading into this new series. We’re going in with a lot of trust already earned.

So, what’s the story?

Jessica ends up in possession of Carnage, thanks to a major development in Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity #5 the month before, and that alone reshapes everything about how she operates going forward. The series pulls her back to her private investigator roots, working cases alongside journalist Ben Urich in the parts of New York most heroes know to avoid. Her first real target is the Hangman, a vigilante going after the city’s criminal organizations hard enough that even someone like Tombstone is rattled. The catch is that Jessica has to solve the case while keeping Carnage under control and keeping the symbiote itself a secret from the very journalist she’s working with, all while wrestling with darker instincts she’s never had to manage before.

Who’s Making Spider-Woman?

Dan Watters writes, Andrea Broccardo draws, and Ito covers, published by Marvel Comics.

Watters has an extensive resume across publishers, Loki (2023) and a deep run of Batman work at DC, including Batman: Dark Patterns, Detective Comics, and Nightwing, along with the creator-owned horror comic Home Sick Pilots at Image. Broccardo most recently drew Spider-Man Noir, Erik Larsen’s 2025-2026 reinvention of the character, and has a solid Marvel track record beyond that too, including stretches on Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, and Alien. The two of them already have real chemistry heading into this, their story in the 50th Anniversary Special was explicitly built as a lead-in to this ongoing, so this isn’t a pairing finding its footing for the first time, it’s a continuation of something already working. Ito’s main cover is a great pull too, we loved their covers on Yuletide, and this one has that same striking quality.

Why We’re Watching This One

A detective noir Spider-Woman book is already exactly our speed, but making Jessica the new host of Carnage raises the stakes in a way that feels genuinely risky for the character rather than just shock value. Watching her try to keep something that violent in check while working a case that requires patience and control sounds like a real character study wrapped inside a crime thriller, and that’s a combination we don’t get from her nearly often enough.

Who Should Add This to Their Pull List?

Longtime Jessica Drew fans are the obvious audience, but this should also land with readers who like their superhero books leaning into detective fiction and crime noir. If you enjoyed the 50th Anniversary Special or Spider-Man Noir, this is a clear next step, and fans of Marvel’s other strong female-led books, we’ve loved Rogue, Magik, and Scarlet Witch recently, should feel right at home here too.
