Captain Planet is Back! Dynamite Brings the Eco-Hero to Comics

Earth. Fire. Wind. Water. Heart. Does that ring a bell? If you were a kid in the ‘90s, it absolutely should. That’s right, Captain Planet is making a comeback, this time in comic book form!

Dynamite Entertainment has announced Captain Planet #1, a brand-new six-issue series that revives the beloved eco-warrior for a new generation.

A Blast from the Past

If you grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a classic. But for the Gen Z, here’s a quick rundown: Gaia, the spirit of the Earth (voiced by none other than Whoopi Goldberg), realizes that humans are trashing the planet. We’re talking pollution, deforestation, and general villainy. So, she entrusts five teenagers with magic rings, each representing an element: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart (which isn’t really an element, but if we use only the four elements it will sound like  witchcraft… and that’s not the goal). When they combine their powers, they summon Captain Planet, the ultimate eco-warrior, who swoops in to save the day and drop some environmental wisdom.

The show ran for six seasons, from 1990 to 1996, leaving a lasting impact on viewers. Whether it was inspiring kids to recycle or just making them believe that teamwork could fix anything, Captain Planet was more than just a cartoon, it was a mission. Clearly the message didn’t work back then (maybe it will now?)

The New Creative Team

Now, nearly 30 years later, Dynamite is reviving the blue-skinned champion with a creative team that has me hyped. Writer David Pepose (from one of my favorite series, The Devil That Wears My Face) and artist Eman Casallos (from the ultra cool and gory Ninjettes) are leading the charge. If you know Pepose’s work, you know he brings bold, fresh takes to every project, and Casallos’ dynamic art is sure to do the eco-hero justice.

And let’s talk covers! Expect stunning artwork from Mark Spears (main cover), Jae Lee, Ben Oliver, and Christian Ward a lineup that promises pure comic book eye candy.

Mark your calendars: Captain Planet #1 hits comic book stores on April 23rd. You can check out the character designs and a preview of the series over at Dynamite’s official website.
