We do not usually review first issues anymore and we prefer to wait for full arcs or series, but Wiccan: Witches’ Road #1 needed to be an exception.

There are a lot of hands shaping this issue, so I will keep it simple. The series is written by Wyatt Kennedy, an exciting voice who already proved he understands queer stories, messy emotions, and supernatural energy in Nights and multiple Marvel Pride Specials. The art is by Andy Pereira who delivers clean storytelling, expressive character moments, and a mood that fits both the romantic scenes and the darker, witchy parts. The colors by Bryan Valenza also really help set the tone on the different atmospheres of this first issue. And with gorgeous covers, this issue already feels like a celebration of Wiccan, but also Hulkling.

The story picks up right after everything goes wrong. Wiccan and Hulkling return to Earth after the events of Imperial and after having their home completely destroyed. Hulkling is badly hurt, and Billy is doing everything he can to keep him safe and conscious. Their bond is the emotional core of the issue, from the small jokes to the way they look at each other (and kiss!) even in the middle of panic. But nothing stays calm for long. A forest spirit attacks them, and the entire scene shifts into horror territory fast. They barely escape, and that is when they hear about a witch who might be able to save Hulkling… This leads Billy toward the mysterious Witches’ Road, a place filled with old magic and dangerous forces. The first issue sets up a tense and emotional journey that promises to change Billy in a big way. This is all very exciting (but also a bit scary!).

This first issue felt special right away. Not only because Billy finally headlines a solo series, but because the emotional connection between him and his husband Teddy is done SO WELL. The way they care for each other is honestly the highlight for me. The horror elements surprised me in the best way too. The forest attack is creepy and fast, and once the witch enters the story, the atmosphere becomes even more unsettling and we know it’s going to get deep and messy. The mix of romance, panic and supernatural danger just works. And we need to talk about the covers because the main cover and all variants for this issue are gorgeous. Of course we grabbed quite a few of them. Overall, this first issue gave me exactly what I hoped for: drama, love, horror, and a story that feels like a perfect fit for Wiccan (and for my favorite Marvel couple).

We’re already counting the days until issue two (out on January 21, 2026!) because if this is how Wiccan’s journey begins, then the rest of the series is about to be pure craziness in the best way and we just can’t wait.
