It’s Halloween month, and today we’re here to talk about a great graphic novel we just read, Never By Night: Disturbing Passages into the Unknown (Vol. 2), by Jonathan Chance. So let’s get into it!

I love a good graphic novel, and this one absolutely delivered. Written by Jonathan Chance, this second volume brings us four different stories, each one drawn by a different artist: Late Night Host by Joao Vieira, Video Van Man by Mike Bogdanovic, Now All Is Silver Blue by Emilio Utrera, and Collect Them All by Rodel Noora. Each story stands on its own but fits together perfectly as one eerie, unsettling ride through all kinds of horror.
The first story, Late Night Host, was my favorite. It has this wild mix of media satire and body horror that completely pulled me in. It’s creepy, fast, and gross in all the right ways. Then we get Video Van Man, which hits that nostalgic ‘80s horror vibe that I love. Think video nasties, weird VHS tapes, and just enough dark humor to make it feel like a lost B-movie gem. Now All Is Silver Blue switches gears into something more emotional, set in a snowy post-apocalyptic world that feels cold in more ways than one. And then we wrap up with Collect Them All, which takes something as innocent as a kid’s play day and turns it into total zombie chaos, an ending that’s gory, clever, and surprisingly heartfelt.
What really makes this second volume of Never By Night stand out is how much the art shapes each story’s tone. Every artist gives their piece a unique texture. Vieira’s sketchy and unsettling style fits the hallucinations of Late Night Host perfectly, while Bogdanovic’s clean, retro lines in Video Van Man make it look like a comic straight out of the late ‘80s. Utrera brings tension and grit to Now All Is Silver Blue, and Noora’s detailed, expressive work in Collect Them All adds just enough emotion to make that ending hit harder.
As much as the visuals are a huge highlight, it’s Chance’s storytelling that keeps the anthology cohesive. Each story explores different shades of horror, from psychological to splatter, from emotional loss to tongue-in-cheek chaos. And yet, they all feel like they belong in the same wicked little universe. That’s hard to pull off, but this book nails it.
So yes, this anthology absolutely earns its place on your October reading list. It’s creepy, creative, and surprisingly emotional when it wants to be. My personal pick is still Late Night Host, but honestly, there’s not a weak link here.
Never By Night, Vol. 2 is out now (as well as the first volume that was out last year – hopefully this can become a new Halloween tradition), so you can grab your copy on Amazon.com or Amazon.ca, or ask your local comic shop. And if you happen to be in Los Angeles, the creator and writer will have an in-store signing at Golden Apple on October 29! Four stories, amazing artists, and a whole lot of nightmare fuel. What more could you want for Halloween?
