‘I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer’ Review: Stitched, Slashed, and Stunning

You already know how obsessed I was after Issue #1 of I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer. (as per my first review where I was basically screaming in all caps the whole time). But now that the full series has wrapped? I am, quite literally, slain.

I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer
Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Doug Wagner
Artist: Daniel Hillyard
Colorist: Michelle Madsen
Letterer: Ed Dukeshire
Release date: April – August 2025

Doug Wagner and Daniel Hillyard, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, these two are unstoppable (Plastic, Plush, Vinyl, and now this? Legends only). From start to finish, this book didn’t just meet my expectations. It stitched, tailored them to perfection, and sent them down the runway covered in blood. And glitter.

This could’ve been a straight-up “killer with a sewing machine” type story. Fun, campy, fashion-horror vibes. But nope. Wagner and Hillyard went way further. This series is not just about Rennie being a designer who happens to collect corpses like extra fabric. It’s about Rennie’s feelings, her anxiety, the people around her, the friendships, the rivalries… ok, and the corpses. I was not expecting to feel this many feelings in a book where leather jackets are made of human skin (very stylish tattooed skins). Rennie is written with such style, confidence, anddon’t-love-me” energy that you can’t help but be on her side as she kills people left and right and then bathes on their blood (Don’t even try to fight me on this. You were rooting for her too).

Also, I need to say it. The last issue? One of my favorite single issues of all time, period. No exaggeration. The fight panels? Some of the most brilliantly choreographed, gorgeously drawn sequences I’ve ever seen in comics. The pacing, the movement, the way each panel hit. I had to stop and just stare at the pages like they were stitched on a dress walking down a runway in Paris.

This series is bloody, stylish, heartfelt, funny, and one of the most unique comics I’ve read this year. Wagner and Hillyard, take a bow. You’ve made something iconic, and my bookshelf looks way cooler for having it.

Now as I go reread the whole thing and plan out my Rennie-inspired wardrobe, you should look for the whole series at your LCS.  If you can’t find it, the paperback is out in December!
