We already talked about Dark Pyramid when the first issue was out, but now that the full series ended, it’s time to talk more about it!

Dark Pyramid

Artist: P.J. Holden

Letterer: Taylor Esposito
Release date: March 2025 – July 2025
Dark Pyramid is written by Paul Tobin, who we already liked from My Date With Monsters and Bunny Mask. His mix of weird, smart horror and fun dialogue really works here too. The art is by P. J. Holden and it matches the vibe perfectly. It’s creepy when it needs to be but still feels energetic and full of movement, especially during the action scenes.
And the story! What a story. Famous live streamer Hooky Hidalgo disappears on a climb up Mount Denali. The whole thing happens live, and his followers notice when the stream cuts out. His girlfriend Becca decides to find out what happened. At first it’s all snowy landscapes and mystery, but then it gets much stranger. There’s something buried under Denali, something old and silent. People try to warn her, and some want her dead…

This comic was such a fun surprise. It starts like an adventure story with some horror around the edges, then keeps getting weirder in the best way. We were hooked from issue one when Becca arrives in Denali and things quickly go off the rails. There’s a great moment where her new friend in this adventure wakes her up just to say she’s going to be killed and people will blame it on a bear… yes, that’s the spirit.
The creatures design is awesome and you will meet Eve, who’s terrifying but fascinating. By issue two, we learn about the buried pyramid and the whole vibe shifts into something more wild and creative. The “hoats” in issue three (goats with human faces) are disturbing and ridiculous and somehow totally work… and then we learn what the Dark Pyramid is all about. It’s such a great concept, and I especially loved the last issue, where it wraps everything up in a colorful and satisfying way.

This comic gave us great monsters, cool characters, fun dialogue, and a story that kept building up to something strange and memorable. Definitely one of my favorites this year. It was truly a page-turner for me, and I would love to have a sequel someday in the same spirit.
Dark Pyramid is short, smart, weird, and totally worth your time. If your LCS still has the issues in stock, go for it! If not, no worries, the trade paperback will be out in September 2025!
