This special issue actually collects the first six chapters of the Avengers Academy Infinity Comic, originally released on the Marvel Unlimited app. If you haven’t read an Infinity Comic before, they’re made specifically for scrolling on your phone (as if we weren’t already glued to our screens enough, but at least now it’s with comics!).

The Marvel Unlimited app is also great if you don’t have the cash to buy every single comic. Sure, you have to wait a few months to read the newest stuff, which can be annoying during events or crossovers, but it’s a solid way to catch up on full runs. But let’s get into Avengers Academy: Assemble.

In this story, Captain Marvel brings together a group of young, up-and-coming heroes to train and grow (kind of like a modern-day Xavier’s School, but for the next generation of Avengers). And what really makes this team shine? It’s packed with queer characters. Pride Month is over, but we should celebrate diversity all year long, correct?

Meet the squad:

Escapade – A mutant with the power to swap places and powers with anyone nearby. Super fun and chaotic.

Captain America (of the Railways) – Not to be mistaken with Steve Rogers.

Moon Girl – and her dinosaur.

Red Goblin (Normie Osborn) – He’s got a lot going on emotionally, and it shows.

Bloodline – Blade’s daughter. Slaying.

Kid Juggernaut – Big guy with a soft side.

The issue gives everyone room to shine, and not just in the fight scenes. The best part? Watching the team connect. They open up, share their stories, and start to build real friendships. It’s the kind of emotional depth that makes you care about them beyond the costumes and powers.

I didn’t see Swarm showing up as the villain, and somehow it totally worked. The action is great, but what stuck with me most was the way these characters bonded and made space for each other.

Writer Anthony Oliveira knows how to write queer characters with heart and humor, and it shows. The art, split between Carola Borelli (issues 1, 2, 5, 6) and Bailie Rosenlund (issues 3 and 4), brings it all to life in a way that’s dynamic and expressive.

If you’re looking for a comic that’s full of action, heart, a little drama (because what school doesn’t have drama?), and a genuinely lovable cast, Avengers Academy: Assemble is a must-read. And once you finish, you can keep following this amazing team in the ongoing Infinity series on Marvel Unlimited. There are more than 48 issues out!
