We don’t write about graphic novels too often, but that doesn’t mean we’re not fans. And today, I have to share one that completely hooked me: Betweeners by Adam Carter, with art by Armin Ozdic.

Betweeners
Writer: Adam Carter
Artist: Armin Ozdic
Colorist: Gui Sabino
Letterer: Héctor Negrete
Release date: April 3o, 2025
This story has one of my favorite horror themes: exorcism. You know the drill, possessed people, creepy chanting, and demons that need to be kicked out. But Betweeners does something fresh with it. It adds a wild twist: The exorcist is the one possessed (yes, really.)
We’re introduced to Shane Beck, a tough, demon-fighting exorcist. But here’s the big reveal: he’s actually being controlled by Mike Baxter, a soul that escaped Hell after dying in the 1980s. And Mike isn’t (really) a demon. He is just a guy with a shady past trying to figure out what to do with this second chance on earth.
What I loved most was Mike’s character. He wakes up on Earth in someone else’s body, and the world has totally changed. (Can you imagine going from cassette tapes to smartphones?) But instead of going full villain, Mike chooses to fight demons and do some good.
Things are kinda settling when James, Shane’s estranged son, shows up. Now Mike has to deal with being a fake dad while keeping his secret. The way Mike connects with James (using Shane’s memories and all) is actually really touching.
But, of course, things don’t stay calm for long. Hell is losing it. They’re not happy that one of their lost souls is up on Earth, stealing bodies and kicking demons out left and right. And they are going to do something about it…
I won’t spoil any more, but I’ll just say this: I loved every page of Betweeners. It’s exciting, emotional, funny, and full of action. The story is clever, the art looks amazing, and the pacing is perfect, I couldn’t stop reading.
Betweeners is available digitally on GlobalComix and Amazon Kindle. Go read it, like, now. You’re welcome.
