Vicarious: A Sci-Fi Thriller You Need to Read

The five-issue run of Vicarious was a wild ride, and now that it’s complete, I have a lot of thoughts.

Such a great team for this comics! Writer Ryan Parrott, who has done amazing work on Power Rangers, delivers a story that is intense, fast-paced, and full of twists. Artist Eleonora Carlini, who has worked on Radiant Black and also on Power Rangers, brings so much energy to every page. And I have to mention the covers. Dan Panosian absolutely nailed them all. The covers for issues #1 to #5 are what first got me curious about the series. They immediately set the tone, making you want to know what’s inside. And the best part of it? The story lived up to them.

The story follows Justin, a young man looking for connection and purpose. He joins the underground world of proxies, people who rent out their bodies so others can experience life through them. But Justin has a secret. The real Justin is dead, and he has taken over his identity. As he goes deeper into this world, things get complicated fast. He takes on strange clients, gets caught up in dangerous power struggles, and realizes he might be in way over his head…

I loved the whole idea of proxies. The thought of people selling access to their experiences is both cool and a little terrifying. Justin was such an interesting main character, and I was hooked on his story from the start. The art fit the vibe perfectly, and the pacing kept me turning pages, issue after issue. This series had everything I wanted. Sci-fi, mystery, and a very interesting lead character. The whole concept was excellent, and I loved that it went way beyond what I expected. I would honestly love to read more about this world, as I think there is a huge potential behind all these amazing ideas. I know Ryan Parrott is busy, but a man can dream…

The full series is out now in single issues (and you saw these covers, right?!), and a trade paperback will probably be coming in the next few months. If you like sci-fi with a dark and twisted edge, I can’t recommend this one enough!
