The creators & the story

Summer Shadows is written by the talented John Harris Dunning (it was the first work from him that I read, but I will definitely follow what he’s writing from now on), with stunning artwork by Ricardo Cabral, who also provides the cover art for the series.

Nick travels to the idyllic Greek island of Avraxos to search for his ex-boyfriend, Anthony, who mysteriously disappeared after a postcard breakup. The local coast guard, Alekos, is investigating another case of a missing man, and their paths cross as they uncover a chilling connection to a luxurious superyacht, the Nyx. As they dig deeper, they realize the island’s bright, sun-drenched beaches conceal darker secrets, secrets tied to a vampiric force that could change everything…

Give them your blood… and more?

First, let’s take a minute to appreciate the main covers of this series. These are too beautiful.

As a lover of queer stories and horror, Summer Shadows hits all the right notes. The blend of mystery, vampire lore, and atmospheric tension is perfectly executed. The art is breathtaking, especially the colors and the contrast between the Greek landscape and the dark shadows creeping through the narrative. We can already see on the above covers how the colors play an important part in the atmosphere of this story. Nick’s journey is one of longing and confusion, and I enjoyed a lot discovering with him what’s happening on that crazy yacht. The final issue is particularly satisfying, offering a perfect mix of horror and beauty that leaves a lasting impact.

If you’re into eerie, sun-drenched mysteries with a dose of supernatural horror, this is totally a must-read, whether you manage to find the issues in your LCS or to buy the trade paperback out in April 2025!
