Release date: January 15, 2025
Written by Grant Sputore and Ryan Engle, both known for their cinematic storytelling (Sputore directed Netflix movie I Am Mother, and Engle wrote Beast and Rampage), Behemoth instantly feels like a movie in comic form. Jay Martin’s art, which we can also appreciate in Lost Boy and Yellow comics (that he also wrote, both published by Dark Horse Comics), makes it a comic series to definitely check out.
The story starts with Sara, owner of a sandwich truck and also working in a fulfillment center, that we will follow as a Godzilla-esque creature rises from the depths and unleashes chaos on Lower Manhattan. The official synopsis reveals what’s to come in the series and the last scene of this first issue: a bus full of civilians, including Sara, is swallowed by the beast (that we can also see on the main cover). You can also preview the first pages on Dark Horse Comics’ website!

From the very first page, I was hooked. And the second page was even better, with a “Merde” thrown in there (as a French guy, I appreciated it). The art is great, especially Martin’s depictions of the monster rampaging through the city (see above!). There’s a great balance of high-energy action with quiet moments of tension, and the cliffhanger left me wanting more. I’m eager to see where this series goes, as the monster’s world (and its belly) is just starting to open up.
With a talented creative team that already showed what they are capable of in this first issue, Behemoth will become a must-read for fans of monster stories and survival thrillers. It’s such a fun and exciting read!
